What does Unlimited Data really mean?

Unlimited data sounds like a really exciting plan when shopping around for broadband providers. After all, the prospect of being able to download and upload files of whichever size without having limits put on your speeds or data availability is an exciting one. “Unlimited data” is a concept that is relatively new, as market needs differ with time. At the onset of the Internet age, there was no need for providers to lure customers with unlimited broadband. After all, customers had yet to realize the thrills of downloading movies and music, and the Internet was so slow that even if they had, they would probably have given up.

Fast forward to today and the ever increasing demand for data has led the Internet service providers to put limits on data plans in order to protect themselves from significantly high costs. What this means is that if you want to use more data, you will definitely have to pay more for this privilege.

So where do unlimited Internet providers come in? Today, the costs of data have fallen significantly in comparison to what they were a few years ago. As such, providers are able to offer data plans on an unlimited basis to their customers without worrying too much about making losses.

What Internet providers do to in order to avail unlimited data to their users is to estimate the capacity required for a particular group of users in a certain area, and then avail this to the users at a certain rate. Usually, the providers will estimate that within a particular period, the users will not go beyond a certain level of consumption. The truth, however, is that this might happen. For instance, when multiple users decide to stream HD movie on Netflix all at once, the broadband might face some constraints.

It is therefore important that you choose an ISP that can cope with demand, fluctuating and otherwise. There are certain things that you should look out for in order to determine which would be the best ISP for unlimited data.

First, you need to consider what others are saying about certain providers, as they have experienced them before. If review sites are littered with complaints, do not give an ISP the benefit of the doubt. Whirlpool is a great place to start if you are looking for candid feedback from ISP users. Whirlpool is an online forum where customers discuss topics of interest to them.

Next, you need to be very keen on the fine print of your unlimited data plan’s terms and conditions. Sometimes an ISP will sell you an unlimited data plan but include conditions on what they consider an acceptable level of usage, beyond which you might incur additional costs. They might even include unlimited data plans as part of a package that includes services such as pay TV and so on. You need to be very clear on what you’ll be paying for.

Lastly, review your Internet usage to determine whether you actually need an unlimited plan. You stand to save a lot of money if you only pay for what you need.
